SOLDIER'S RETURN AFTER TWELVE YEARS. - On Sunday morning Corpl. J Wilkinson, Military Mounted Police, eldest son of Mr, and Mrs. T Wilkinson, of Habblesthorpe, arrived home after and absence of 12 years, six spent in India and six in Egypt. During the present war he has seen active service at the Suez Canal and the Western Frontier of Egypt. He left Alexandria on the 12th on SS "Border." The journey home took eight days. He landed at Marseilles and crossed France on rail. The change of climate from India to Egypt causes him to suffer for some time from ague, but he seems now fit. He went to Aldershot on Saturday. Extract from the Grantham Journal 29 June 1935. Among the Bardney contingent, who are this year's smartest branch of the Legion in Lincolnshire - were Mr. J W. Rollings, M.M. (4th Worcesters, 29 Division and Mr. John Wilkinson, who held the heavyweight boxing championship of Egypt and Sudan for 13 years. The latter a tough chap, was with the Military Mounted Police and proudly displayed a flag which he captured and retained when the British troops entered Jerusalem,. That flag accompanied him to France and Germany and back to "Blighty," and is now treasured at Bardney.
