Extract from the Scotsman, 7/2/1921. Another Dublin Tragedy. Military Foot Police Shot Dead. Old Gloucester Place, Dublin, was the scene of a startling tragedy on Saturday morning, when John Ryan, a member of the military foot police. was shot dead there at 10.30. Ryan went into a licensed house across the street from his own residence and while having refreshment he was shot. Ryan was accompanied by his brother-in-law, and it is asserted that three men entered the house, and one of them cried out, "That's him" and "hands Up." Shots at point blank range were fired. Ryan fell at once and bled profusely from a wound in the head, and when he was taken to Jervis Street Hospital in the Corporation ambulance, life was pronounced extinct. The whole thing happened with such startling suddenness that the assailants got away before the alarm could be raised. Ryan who was about 48 years of age, had had a long service in the Army, and subsequent to fighting in the late war he was engaged in plain clothes Army duty in Dublin . Also:- Western Mail 7/2/21.
