Alleged Bigamist and Wife Collapse in Court. A remarkable story of bigamy, during the hearing both the accused and his wife fainted, was heard at Hampstead yesterday, when Lance Corporal Thomas McCloy, aged 27, of the Military Foot Police, Cork, was charged with bigamously marrying Agnes Brown, Edinburgh, at an Edinburgh Register Office. Detective Inspector Boothey said that as he understood the English Courts could not deal with a case of bigamy in which the second "marriage" took place in Scotland, he would ask for the case to be dismissed and for the papers to be forwarded to Edinburgh. This course was agreed to, and prisoner was then charged with bigamously marrying Renee Gertrude Padget, Darlington on 1st April this year, at a register office. McCloy pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Wilkins said that when told he would be charged and that witness had received communications from several other ladies, prisoner replied: " I have only been married three times." Witness said prisoner walked into Hampstead police station, and, after saying he was an absentee fro his Corps said that he had committed bigamy with Agnes Brown. Having taken the oath previously to giving evidence Mrs McCloy, fainted in the witness box. On her recovery she stated that she was married to the prisoner at Hampstead Register office on 13th June 1916, and there was one child, a three year old boy, of the marriage. On being remanded prisoner fell from the dock to the floor of the Court, and was carried out by four police officers.
