Edward Matthews. Extract from the Staffordshire Sentinel 30 July 1936. POPULAR CITY POLICE OFFICER - Retirement of PC Matthews. Police Constable Edward Matthews, of the Longton Division of the City Police, retires to-morrow after serving 25 years in the Stoke on Trent Force. Police Constable Matthews is one of the most popular men attached to the Longton Division. In addition, he has earned the respect of his superior officers for his efficiency and devotion to duty. He joined the Force in 1911, and after three months in Hanley was posted to Longton, where he has remained ever since. He joined the Army in 1915 and served with the Military Mounted Police attached to the 4th Division. He aw service in France, Germany and Belgium and received the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. Upon demobilisation ind 1919, he rejoined the City Police. In his younger days Police Constable Matthews was a keen athlete and in 1912 was presented with a gold watch for winning the 110 yards police handicap at Longton Park. One of his hobbies has been the breeding of Norwich canaries and he has secured many prizes with his birds. Constable Matthews, who is a widower, lives at Argyle Road, Longton.
