MIDLAND MEN HONOURED BY THE PRESIDENT. A list of decorations conferred by the President of France, published in the "London Gazette" last night, contains the following Midland names: L/Cpl. J Sabin, Military Mounted Police, Birmingham. Repeated in the Birmingham Daily Gazette 23 November 1918. Extract from the Staffordshire Newsletter 22 September 1956. COMMISSIONED IN FLEET AIR ARM. A former pupil of King Edward VI School, Stafford, Mr Raymond Victor Sabin, age 30, of Oxford Gardens, Stafford has recently been commissioned as an Air Artificer in the Fleet Air Arm. He joined the Service 12 years ago as an apprentice and during that time served on the aircraft carriers Ocean and Theseus in Korea and Malta. Now he is undergoing officer instruction on HMS Thunderer, a shore base at Plymouth. A skilful rugby player, he formerly played for Stafford Rugby Club and has represented the Navy in Northern Ireland. His father, Mr. T Sabin of 21, Rickerscote Road, is the Vice-Chairman of Stafford British Legion. he served for 21 years in the cavalry and Military Mounted Police earning among other distinctions, the French honour, the Croix de Guerre. Extract from the Staffordshire Newsletter 14 August 1964. An Old Soldier Looks Back. Memories of the First World War were recalled by 74 year old Joseph Sabin on Saturday when he went to see the colourful guard of honour - six soldiers of the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery - at the wedding of Mr. Anthony Raymond Kinson and Miss Janice Barton Diffin. A member of the Old Contemptables Association, Mr Sabin, of 21 Rickerscote Road was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1917 when fighting in France. He joined the 3rd Kings Own Hussars in 1909 at the age of 18 and was posted to South Africa. When war broke out in 1914 he was transferred to the battle front. After being injured early in the war, he was transferred to the Military Mounted Police and was attached to the 34th Division when decorated with the French Croix de Guerre. He took part in the famous retreat from Mons and also the battle of Marne, Ypres, Aisne and Somme. AT REUNION. Recently Mr Sabin attended a grand reunion of the Old Contemptibles held in London in June. Among the functions which he attended were a variety show in the Royal Albert Hall and a Jubilee Parade ans service at St. Paul's Cathedral. During the Second World War, Mr. Sabin was a member of the English Electric Home Guard and when General de Gaulle visited Stafford and inspected the Home Guard, Mr. Sabin had the honour of personal congratulations from the General on his achievements in France.
