Citation:   France & Flanders. The Police Review, 17/5/18 page 156. The following has been received from her husband by Mrs McKay, wife of L/Cpl McKay, of the Hull City Police:- On the morning of the 9th April I was on traffic control duty, when the road in the vicinity of my post was being heavily shelled by enemy artillery. The traffic at the time was heavy with all kinds of troops and transport. Although two shells burst - one behind and one in front I am thankful to say I am no worse for my experience. After the second shell burst a soldier who was on horse back was hit and thrown to the ground. I immediately went to his assistance, but found he had been killed instantaneously. I then removed him to the side of the road clear of the traffic and then resumed my duty at my post. On the 13th inst. I was recommended for the Military Medal. Police Review, 17/5/1918, page 156.
