ABSOLUTE FEARLESSNESS. Commanding Officer's Tribute To Policeman. The conduct of Corporal F. Rowles, of the Mounted Military Police and formerly of Warrington, has been favourably commented upon by his superior officers. He was on duty at the junction of two roads "somewhere in France," when shelling commenced. He at once proceeded t the "shell" area to see if he could render any assistance to the troops or inhabitants. With the other members of the Mounted Military Police he returned to his post and found the streets full of female employees from one of the factories near by. He persuaded these and other civilians, also present to take shelter in the houses and refused to allow the troops to stand about the roads. He proceeded to control the traffic and ensured the free passage of the ambulance vehicles. Writing to his mother, who lives at Latchford, Corporal Rowles's commanding officer states: "His example of absolute fearlessness and calm in trying conditions undoubtedly helped to prevent panic amongst the civilian population. Extract from the Runcorn Examiner 12 April 1919. P. C. Rowles, Sergeant, Military mounted Police, who also served in Italy, travelled home with P.C. Thompson. He is an ex Yeomanry man, who joined up in January 1915 and after lengthy service on the Western Front was sent to Italy. Other men recently demobilised are Detectives Green and Skelton, both of whom enlisted in the Military Mounted Police and were afterwards drafted to the Detective Branchy of the Police Corps.
