Sergeant Major A Stanton who prior to the war was a sergeant in the Manchester Force is now with the MMP in France and has been awarded the MSM for devotion to duty. Police Review, 10/11/1916, page 455. A gallant Manchester Sergeant. Sergt. Major Stanton, whose portrait appears on this page with those of his wife and daughter is now serving in the Military Police. He was recently awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for devotion to duty, and has twice been mentioned in despatches. Sergt. Major Stanton has now been on active service for 18 months, and has been in France for over a year. On several occasions he has saved the inhabitants of French villages from danger, when under shell fire, and has got them into safety. Before the war he was a Sergeant in the Manchester Force, in which he has served 16 years. As a Policeman he received many awards for saving life, and only last December, when home on leave, he was presented with a silver medal for stopping a runaway horse, as reported in our columns at the time. On this occasion he was instrumental in saving the lives of several school children, and his wife and little daughter have good reason to be proud of their gallant husband and father. EX MANCHESTER POLICE OFFICER'S PROMOTION. An ex-member of the C Division of the Manchester City Police Force, Sergeant A Stanton, who lived in Lorne Street, Crowcroft, Longsight, has been promoted Squadron Sergeant Major in the Military Mounted Police, 9th Scottish Division, British Expeditionary Force, France., He enlisted six months ago, and was the first member of the Manchester Mounted Police to join the Military Police. Shortly before leaving Manchester he was awarded the police medal by the Watch Committee for bravery in stopping a runaway horse in Ardwick. Extract from the Manchester Evening News 3 July 1916. CITY POLICEMAN HONOURED. A former well known member of the C Division of the Manchester City Police, Sergeant Major A. Stanton was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's recent despatch. He is in the Military Mounted Police and had previously received recognition for work at Loos last year. His home is at 8 Lorne Street, Crowcroft Park, Manchester.
