He enlisted in October 1912 and in 1915 was drafted to Gallipoli, where he fought in many engagements until the evacuation of the Peninsula. Proceeding to France he was in action in the Battles of Messines and Ypres, and later was transferred to the Military Foot Police and served with this unit until the end of the war. He was stationed in Germany with the Army of Occupation until he returned home and was demobilised in December 1919, holding the 1914-1915 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
