Mobilised in August 1914, he was immediately drafted to the Western Front, where he served throughout the Battle of Mons. He also took part in the Battles of Ypres, the Somme, Arras, Cambrai and Amiens and many other important engagements and fought in the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He was discharged in April 1919 and holds the Mons Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
