He served throughout the South African was and volunteering at the outbreak of hostilities proceeded to France in 1915 and served in various sectors. Transferred to Egypt late in 1915, he rendered excellent services stationed at Alexandria, Cairo, Port Said and Ismalia. Returning to England he was demobilised in July 1919 and holds the 1914-1915 Star and the General Service and Victory medals and also the Queen's South African Medal.
