Volunteering in September 1914 he was immediately drafted to India, where he served on the North West Frontier until December 1916. He was then transferred to Mesopotamia and there too part in the capture of Kut and Baghdad and various other places. He was demobilised on his return home in November 1919, holding the General Service and Victory Medals.
