He volunteered in December 1915, and was quickly drafted to the Western front, where he rendered valuable services with the Mounted Military police in the Ypres and Somme sectors. He also served on the Piave in Italy, and after the Armistice was sent to Cologne, where he did duty with the Army of Occupation. He was demobilised in September 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
