Mobiliesed in August 1914, he was immediately drafted to the Western Front, where he fought in the Battle of Mons and the Subsequent Retreat. He also took part in the Battle of Le Cateau, the Marne, the Aisne, La Bassee, Ypres and Neuve Chapelle before being transferred to Gallipoli, where he was in action at Suvla Bay. He afterwards served in Mesopotamia, and was present in the engagements at Sanna-i-yat, at the Relief of Kut and the capture of Baghdad.
